Advances in modern medicine have led to a number of improvements in dermatologic care for chronic skin conditions like psoriasis. Many psoriasis patients notice that their skin is clearer in the summer months, or after a time in which they have enjoyed time outdoors. Natural sunlight is, in some ways, very good for skin affected by psoriasis. There are also dangers to excessive sun exposure. Fortunately, scientists have discovered the true power of light, and the field of dermatology has expanded its treatment of psoriasis to include UV light.
Dermatology Associates of Northern Virginia, Inc. offers a high standard of dermatologic care that incorporates proven light therapy technology. Using specialized equipment such as our in-office full body light box or our hand/foot light unit, we can help patients handle their most pressing skin concerns when affected by inflammatory conditions. A dermatologic light box looks like a tanning bed, and can deliver full-body treatments. This equipment, compared to a tanning bed, however, utilizes narrowband UVB light. This light energy promotes healing of irritated skin.
Light therapy has been used in dermatology for several years as an outpatient treatment for conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, and vitiligo. Treatment with narrowband ultraviolet light B is comfortable and effective, delivering a specific wavelength of energy to the skin for the desired outcome. Patients who receive light therapy often notice an immediate improvement in the appearance and symptoms of their skin. After treatment in our light box, patients may immediately return to their normal activities.
Psoriasis and other inflammatory conditions also respond well to PUVA therapy, a combination of the Psoralen medication and ultraviolet light A. This is more aggressive than ultraviolet B treatments, and can lead to more rapid clearing of skin lesions.
Because conditions such as psoriasis are chronic, ongoing care is an important part of symptom management. Ultraviolet light therapy may be performed a few times a week for a few months for maximum benefit, and then frequency is decreased.
Your dermatologist is constantly advancing his or her knowledge of various skin conditions and their treatments. Contact our office in Centreville or Sterling to learn more about the benefits of ultraviolet light therapy.
Dermatology AssociatesRating: 5 (Source: www.google.com) I recently had an appointment at the Sterling office. Booking the appointment over the phone was easy and fast. Upon arrival, I found the front desk staff to be pleasant and efficient. My wait time was minimal in the waiting room and well as in the back room, which is always a nice thing with any doctor's office. When I did meet with the doctor, we discussed my issues and overall felt like all my questions and concerns were thoroughly answered before I left. No complaints, and will definitely be coming back if need be and recommending this practice to my family and friends.
