Acne may respond well to light treatments performed in our office near Ashburn

effective light treatments treatment for acne from ashburn dermatologist

Light therapies are relatively new and may be unfamiliar to many patients seeking solutions for stubborn acne. Our experienced physicians are continually advancing their knowledge of innovative technologies that may benefit their patients. Blue light therapy, in particular, a form of photodynamic therapy (PDT), may be recommended for the treatment of acne. Photodynamic therapy treatments performed in our offices near Ashburn may be used as a sole form of treatment or as a part of a comprehensive skin care plan.

What is photodynamic therapy?

In dermatologic terms, “photo” means light. “Dynamic” is a term used to describe action. Photodynamic therapy is the action of light in the skin. Treatment is completed over a period of a few hours.

  • We begin by gently cleansing the skin and “degreasing” it with a mild scrub.
  • A medication is then applied over the entire face, where it remains for an hour or two depending on the recommendation of the prescribing physician. This medication targets glands and cells, causing them to have greater sensitivity to light.
  • Once medication has been absorbed into glands and cells, blue light is directed towards the face for a prescribed period of time. This is usually no more than twenty minutes. During the first five minutes of light treatment, mild discomfort may occur.

After light therapy for acne, the skin may appear slightly red and protection with an adequate sunscreen must take place. Sun exposure should be mindfully avoided for the first two days after treatment, as the skin remains highly sensitive to light. Slight swelling, redness, and irritation may continue for several days as skin cells react to light treatment. As the skin heals, it becomes clearer, smoother, and healthier.

Dr. Neeraja C. Mattay Reviewed by Andy. K.

I recently had an appointment at the Sterling office. Booking the appointment over the phone was easy and fast. Upon arrival, I found the front desk staff to be pleasant and efficient. My wait time was minimal in the waiting room and well as in the back room, which is always a nice thing with any doctor's office. When I did meet with the doctor, we discussed my issues and overall felt like all my questions and concerns were thoroughly answered before I left. No complaints, and will definitely be coming back if need be and recommending this practice to my family and friends.
